Beginning three years ago as a singer-songwriting project for PETER SILBERMAN, The Antlers have since expanded into a full three-piece, including powerhouse drummer Michael Lerner and the layer-lathering, multi-instrumentalist, Darby Cicci. Appropriately enough, "Hospice?s ten distinct chapters resonate on debilitating sonic and lyrical levels, from the hypnotic harp and tension-ratcheting build of "Two" to the singor- sink choruses of "Bear" and the speaker-rattling peaks of "Sylvia". Mastered by GREG CALBI who has worked with SONIC YOUTH, GRIZZLY BEAR, MGMT and PASSION PIT amongst many more, the sound on the album is hauntingly beautiful and the album will no doubt be heavily featured on many best of ?09 lists.

The second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. With string and orchestral arrangements by two of the band members, "Neon Bible" is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. For the best part of a decade, Los Angeles native Ariel Rosenberg has been carving some of the most intoxicating music going, a reclusive pop surrealist whose corroded productions have led to a cult following that has often been difficult to keep up with. Now signed to 4AD, Ariel Pink s Haunted Graffiti release Before Today on June 8, 2010.

With roots going back as far as 1996, the West Coast act are as sublime as they are surreal with a sound loaded with hazy nostalgia and a fiercely experimental pop palette. From the Haunted Graffiti series (from which the full band s name is now derived), which featured the likes of Worn Copy (2005) and House Arrest (2006), Ariel Pink has established himself as one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, a visionary producer in the vein of Joe Meek and Ariel s hero and previous collaborator, tape deck dilettante, R. Stevie Moore, creating a world through certain production touches.

Ms. Baez's most successful album, artistically and commercially...and she recorded it on her own terms and direction. The material she chose to cover includes songs originally by Jackson Browne, Stevie Wonder, her forever love Bob Dylan and The Allman Brothers. But it was the title track that must have brought her the most satisfaction, as it was self-penned. An ode to her fabled affair with Dylan, it speaks from the heart frankly, affectionately and unapologetically. She was rewarded with it becoming a Top 40 hit (something that had eluded her since the 1960's), one of the biggest in her career. Musicians include Crusaders Wilton Felder and Joe Sample along with Larry Carlton, as well as Joni Mitchell (with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express) who duets on "Di Da". Produced by David Kershenbaum and Baez, it's simply one of her best albums ever.

History's ear hasn't been kind to Joan Baez: in retrospect, set against the traditional voices whose material she interpreted, her own versions seem painfully pretty, her soprano icy and removed. But it's hard to gauge now the force of her first record, a folk revival landmark: Released in 1960 after a triumphant Newport Festival appearance, the record had deep material and emotion that few of her urban folk contemporaries possessed. Her version of "John Riley" is compelling, "East Virginia," glowing, and "Silver Dagger," concentrated, while "Preso Numero Nueve" showed her future political turn. —Roy Francis Kasten
